How Much RAM Does a Game Server Need?
Choose game-server memory using the game baseline, player activity, world size and mods instead of relying on slot count alone.
Reviewed 15 September 2026Player slots are only one input
Every server application has a baseline memory requirement before players join. Active players, explored world data, entities, plugins and mods can increase usage beyond that baseline.
Two servers with the same slot limit may need different memory because their games, maps and mod collections do different amounts of work.
Leave operating headroom
Choose a package that can hold the normal working set without using all assigned memory. Headroom is particularly important during startup, updates, world saves and busy player periods.
Adding memory does not repair network latency or guarantee faster simulation. CPU load, storage activity, game code and connection routing must be assessed separately.
Review real usage before upgrading
Use the client panel metrics during representative busy periods and record the peak memory, CPU and player count. Repeated out-of-memory stops or sustained use close to the package limit are stronger upgrade signals than an isolated startup spike.
Before changing package resources, open a support ticket with the server name, mods, map, expected concurrent players and recent usage so the next package can be sized against the actual workload.
